Automatic Book & Contributor Detection

How Familiar automatically creates books and contributors from your royalty statements

How It Works

When you upload royalty statements from your distributors, Familiar automatically analyzes the data to detect books and contributors. This saves you time by creating most of the initial metadata for you.

Automatic Recreation

If you delete a book, it will be automatically recreated the next time it appears in a royalty statement from your distributors. This ensures you don't accidentally lose track of books that are still generating royalties.

You can disable any book from appearing in your royalty calculations on the Book Management page.

What Gets Detected

Books

  • • Book titles from royalty statements
  • • ISBNs, ASINs, and other identifiers
  • • Book formats (paperback, ebook, audiobook, etc.)
  • • Associated distributors and marketplaces

Contributors

  • • Author names from royalty statements
  • • Contributor roles (author, illustrator, etc.)
  • • Associated books
  • • Royalty payment information

Deleting vs. Disabling Books

Deleting a Book

When you delete a book, it will be automatically recreated if it appears in future royalty statements. Use this when you want to clean up your book list but know the book is still generating royalties.

⚠️ Deleting removes all associated data including custom settings and royalty contracts.

Disabling a Book

Use the visibility toggles (Editorial, Promotion, Royalties) to hide a book from specific dashboards without deleting it. This prevents the book from being recreated while keeping your existing data.

✓ Recommended for books you no longer want to track but might still appear in statements.

Automatic Warnings & Prompts

Familiar automatically detects when books need attention and prompts you to configure them. You'll see warnings like this on your royalty dashboard:

⚠️

Missing Royalty Structures

The following books have royalty statements but need royalty structures set up:

Example Book Title
Missing structures for: Paperback, Ebook

Please set up royalty structures for these books to enable proper royalty calculations.

These warnings ensure you don't misconfigure royalty contracts for newly detected books, helping you keep your royalty calculations accurate and up-to-date.

Best Practices

1

Review newly detected books: After uploading royalty statements, check that the automatically created books have the correct metadata.

2

Use visibility toggles instead of deleting: If you want to hide a book from your dashboard, disable its visibility settings rather than deleting it.

3

Merge duplicates: If the same book appears multiple times with different titles or identifiers, use the Merge feature to combine them.

4

Add missing identifiers: If a book is missing ISBNs or other identifiers, use the "Add Identifier" button to ensure future statements are correctly linked.
